Submission Preparation Checklist

As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
  • The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
  • The submission file is in OpenOffice, Microsoft Word, or RTF document file format.
  • Where available, URLs for the references have been provided.
  • The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs italics, rather than underlining (except with URL addresses); and all illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, rather than at the end.
  • The text adheres to the stylistic and bibliographic requirements outlined in the Author Guidelines.

Author Guidelines

The journal is committed to peer-review integrity and upholding the highest standards of review. Once a submitted article has been assessed for suitability by the editor, it will then be double blind peer reviewed by independent, anonymous expert referees. Accepted papers will be published continuously in the journal as soon as accepted. All articles published by the journal are made immediately available worldwide under an open access license. This means that everyone has free and unlimited access to the full-text of all articles and everyone is free to re-use the published material as long as proper accreditation/citation of the original publication is given.

All articles, reviews and communications published in the journal go through this process and receive at least two review reports. The editor will communicate decisions to the authors regarding the following:

Accept in Present Form: The paper is accepted without any further changes.

Accept after Minor Revisions: The paper is in principle accepted after revision based on the reviewer’s comments. Authors are given five days for minor revisions.

Reconsider after Major Revisions: The acceptance of the manuscript would depend on the revisions. The author needs to provide a point by point response or provide a rebuttal if some of the reviewer’s comments cannot be revised. Usually, only one round of major revisions is allowed. Authors will be asked to resubmit the revised paper within ten days and the revised version will be returned to the reviewer for further comments.

Reject and Encourage Resubmission: An article where additional experiments are needed to support the conclusions will be rejected and the authors will be encouraged to re-submit the paper once further experiments have been conducted.

Reject: The article has serious flaws, makes no original contribution, and the paper is rejected with no offer of resubmission to the journal.

The submitting author, who is generally the corresponding author, is responsible for the manuscript during the submission and peer-review process. The submitting author must ensure that all eligible co-authors have been included in the author list and that they have all read and approved the submitted version of the manuscript. Submitted articles should be compiled in the following order: title page; abstract; keywords; main text introduction, materials and methods, results, discussion; acknowledgments; declaration of interest statement; references; appendices (as appropriate); table(s) with caption(s) (on individual pages); figures; figure captions (as a list).

Submitted manuscripts should not have been published previously, nor be under consideration for publication elsewhere with the exception of conference proceedings papers. All manuscripts are thoroughly refereed through a double-blind peer-review process. There are no restrictions on the length of manuscripts, provided that the text is concise and comprehensive. However, as a general expectation, a typical article for this journal should be no more than 8000 words, inclusive of references, endnotes. Manuscripts submitted to to the journal should neither been published before nor be under consideration for publication in another journal.
